Old Settlers, Part One

This weekend, Hancock, Iowa, celebrated Old Settlers in the adjacent Hancock Memorial and Botna Bend parks. We went out to check it out last night. There were a handful of vendors, a softball tournament, and beer garden going on. None of these interested us, but Botna Bend also happens to be home to several elk and bison.

Nursing the young.

Friendly bull.

Would like some food, please.

The elk are very fun to watch. They're pretty gentle and used to being gawked at. There are many young that run up and down the pen.

Not quite so friendly are the bison. They're feeling especially defensive, as they have some young, including one born just a few days ago.

Pretty sure he wanted me dead.

Keeping my distance.
