Grandma's French Toast at the Corn Crib in Shelby, Iowa

There are very few restaurants within 15 miles of us that are NOT in a gas station. There's the Corn Crib in a gas station by the interstate that looks like a big red barn. There's the Corn Stalk right across the road in another gas station, where you can also get Godfather's Pizza. The Taco John's is in a truck stop. So basically, if you're looking to eat out close by, you're probably going to be at a gas station, as we found ourselves this evening.

The menu said Grandma's French toast. Battered Texas toast...blah blah, can't remember. Anyway, when I read it, although it said battered, I didn't realize that meant deep fried.

Not what I was expecting.

It was like funnel cake with bread inside.

The waiter came up and asked me how it was. I didn't want to tell him what I was really thinking, so I said, "It's like being at the fair!"

And it's good I didn't because he said it was HIS grandma's recipe, what he grew up eating.

Don't get me wrong, it was good in a fried food kind of way, but not for a main dish sort of way.

I went home and ate a bag of carrots to make myself feel better.
