Contra Dance!

A few weeks ago I received a facebook invite from Tyler at Botna Burrow for a Community Contra Dance to take place yesterday evening. Until that point, I didn't even know what contra dance was and had to look it up on wikipedia. Once I knew, I thought it was brilliant! I've watched countless Jane Austen films/miniseries (well, the same ones over and over again), and have thought it's too bad we don't have balls like they do in our culture.

Most of those in attendance came from the Omaha area (Tyler and Cait lived there before starting the farm here) and some of their friends provided the music. In the photo, you can see that the bass is a board, a rope, and a plastic trough (not unlike the one we had for our family dog I cool off in).

The setting was a mowed path by the fields. The view was lovely, the weather was great, the bugs weren't horrible. Everybody was laughing and enjoying the music.

And most people were just learning the dance, so anybody could participate. Tyler walked through the steps before the dance and then called the "figures" during the dance.

Did I dance? No! Unfortunately I was sick this week and was too exhausted to participate. But I had plenty of fun anyway and I hope that there will be another one because it looks really fun!
