Print: "Look! I am doing a new thing."

Left, print on kitakata paper; right, print on masa paper

I originally created this design for the large scale paper cut I made for my church, which you've likely seen if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook. I wasn't finished with it, though, and was compelled to also make a block print of the drawing.

Trees and even new trees growing out of old ones are a common symbol that I've come across in artwork. You might see a Jesse tree (a depiction of the family tree of Jesus in the form of a tree). Megan Suttman (@osageandfern) has a lovely piece with a coppiced tree. Artist Scott Erickson also uses trees, sometimes cut ones, in his language of symbols. I knew I wanted my piece to incorporate a cut tree stump, because that's what I was seeing all over and in my own yard after the derecho cleanup began. I also wanted something symmetrical and relatively simple since my banner design would be split into two down the middle. For visual inspiration, I drew from examples of Medieval "Tree of Porphyry" diagrams (categorizing areas of knowledge).

My prints are available for purchase. There are currently two options for this print. Details below:

$35 - printed on Japanese kitakata paper, natural color. This paper is soft, smooth, and lightweight.
Paper size is approximately 10 1/4" by 15 1/2"
Hand burnished

$25 - printed on Japanese masa paper, bright white color. Very smooth, cut to a standard size for easy framing: 11" by 14"
Only a few available.

I started with the white masa paper sheets, and I think they turned out well but I wasn't entirely satisfied. Then I switched to the kitakata paper (more expensive) and started using a hand burnishing technique, hence the difference in price.

I also have another print available:

$15 - "Room for Growth" printed on masa paper, image size 4" by 6", paper size 8" by 10"
