Pollinator-Friendly Planting
A couple weeks ago, I was invited to see this. I'm not sure what to call it. It's about an acre of intentionally planted native plants for the purpose of providing food for pollinators like bees and butterflies (but it's not CRP...I'll post my visit to a section of CRP later!). It's on a farm near where I live. There were 75 species of grasses and forbs planted. I could not identify all of them (and I can ID very, very few grasses yet), but there was a nice variety.
I believe this to be Canada milkvetch (Astragalus canadensis). It is a member of the pea family.
This is Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), one of my favorites!
The planting is at the top of the hill near the cow pasture. The cows came to watch us while I looked at the flowers.
I think it's a wonderful thing. I love anything that we can do to help pollinators!
This is going to sound weird, maybe, but your prairie posts make me kind of emotional as well as happy. So few people appreciate this kind of natural beauty. And I love your writing style.
ReplyDeleteStacey, I'm so glad to find other people who love the prairie! I get so excited about native plants. Thank you!
